Just downloaded the App from your site (Version: 2.03.203 Last Update: 13.09.2018)
and it doesn't even start!
I run it, it appears in Task Manager for a second (or doesn't at all) and then just disappears. No App window appears on screen. Windows 7x64

Hi Alex,

please verify Windows Data Execution Prevention (DEP) Settings on your System and set an exception for CloneApp.

Go to Start > Control Panel > System.
Go to the Advanced tab and access the Performance Settings.
Go to the Data Execution Prevention tab.
Now select the option "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:

If you need to make changes on this setting a reboot will be required to implement the change.

If you simply install this app via Chocolatey, then either run the plugin import or even manually download and extract the single plugin offered (product keys from Nirsoft) refuses to launch.

My guess is, like the poorly written path code something is hardcoded assuming the app is installed somewhere other than where Chocolatey installs it and therefore renders your plugin path code broken when it calls to "ExternalPlug" path in the plg file.

I'm sorry I usually support free efforts like this however this is just a flat-out DANGEROUS app the way it is written.

Right off the bat when you simply miss including MANUALLY a trailing backslash to the backup path, basic path checking has not even been coded and the app literally BLINDLY appends it's data to whatever the user if you put C:\Temp all your backup folders are C:\TempAppName, etc. Add in that the basic compression setting (there are alll but a handful of settings this app needs to even handle) the code is backwards so you are enabling the compression settings only when it is UNCHECKED - so as of now it is impossible to actually set the compression levels.

After seeing these two very lazy things that should have NEVER slipped through basic testing combined with at least a dozen totally incomplete apps I personally had and now from also reading these reviews and see that most also experience totally broken restored apps, I'd say this app has a VERY long way to go and you should really open-source it to get some other DEV eyes and hands on it.

A+ for effort as we do need an app like this but a real shame it just doesn't cut it.

Other than doing a full backup I know of no other software that will let you move a program from one PC to another. How do you get around the legality of licensing issues (since many programs are licensed for only one PC)?

1st of all thank you for a very useful app.

I tried to clone the Waterfox profile, as follows:


CloneApp has not copied all the files in that folder. Why not?
Please advise.

I am on a Win 8.1/64-bit machine

Hi Peter,

in this case, the simple BackupFolder command is enough :)


Please make sure, that Waterfox is closed, otherwise some files cannot be copied and backed up.

Is it possible to get the an install path from the registry instead of using an env variable (%ProgramFiles%)?

Hello Larry,

you could use optional the Detect parameter to check the existence of an File, Folder or Regkey.

RegKey=Detect|HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows Firewall

Please also look into the Documentation, Chapter 3 - CloneApp Rules

Thanks for this excellent utility. Is it possible to add another option? In addition to the All and installed apps, I'd like to see the ability to save a custom list.

Hi Norbert,

exporting the Installed Plug-ins to a text file is possible
Hamburger/main menu > Advanced settings > Export Plug-ins to text file.

Working with a Custom/Personal Plug-ins directory is also possible. The Option hides as well in the Main menu > Advanced settings > Enable Personal Plug-ins folder. If enabled, CloneApp will always prioritize loading this Personal MyApps directory.

I hope one of these possibilities answers your question. :)

Thanks for this application; I will start to backup my own support terminals and see how this tool performs, perhaps I register later and donate. very very good work at first impression.

Great looking app, looks like it could save me a bit of time.  Apologies for posting a bug report here, but I couldn't see where else to report.

Simple backup of Adobe PDF Reader creates the following folder structure - incorrectly.
CloneApp (Backup)-2018-04-12\Adobe Reader\%AppData%\Adobe\Acrobat\Acrobat

Notice the duplicate Acrobat folder!

This is not an bug, its exceptionally in this case a feature :)

To eliminate redundancies, when backing up an Application which has different locations but same folder name, CloneApp splits the absolute path of each backed up folder to subfolders to the lowest level e.g. CloneApp (Backup)-2018-04-12\Adobe Reader\%AppData%\Adobe\Acrobat

In the last step CloneApp generates a final folder which carries the name of the complete AppData directory, in this case Acrobat. So you have as a final result:
CloneApp (Backup)-2018-04-12\Adobe Reader\%AppData%\Adobe\Acrobat\Acrobat\ or maybe
CloneApp (Backup)-2018-04-12\Adobe Reader\%AppData%\Adobe\Acrobat\Acrobat\DC

I hope that solves the confusion and wish you a happy app cloning :)
